Tintoretto, Susanna and the Elders, c1555
Often this image is given a disingenerous subtitle of 'Vanity' as a jibe at Susanna who is show with a mirror, which as Berger points out is one of the 'reflections' women are subjected to. I believe it would rather suit the subtile of ‘Voyeurs’ or possibly just as apt 'Dirty Old Men'!
Rubens - The Judgement of Paris c1597/99
Berger comments on the many images of Paris ’s judgment, possibly the very first beauty pageant. According to mythology Paris chose the most beautiful woman, as depicted below, making this a further judgement of women.
Rubens - Helene Fourment c1636/38
Ruben's painting of his wife is considered by Berger to be an example of one of the rare images of a woman revealed as herself.
